I want to share with you a principle that I have learned in the last couple of years – action brings clarity. When you don’t know what to do, just take action. Many people feel that they need to get their plan together perfectly before they can start. If you think like that, it is very likely that you will never get very far. I am not saying to run out and start taking action without a plan. You do need a basic plan. However, many people spend years planning out a business they are going to start, a project they are doing to do, a book they are going to write; but years pass and they are no closer to their dream. They may have gotten lots of busy work done, but they haven’t really moved the needle.
You also have to make sure that you are taking the right action. I have come to realize that when I am afraid or procrastinating on something that I should be doing, I immerse myself in busywork. For me it’s housecleaning. It almost seems right, like here’s the inner conversation, “How could you fault me for wanting a clean house, you don’t want to live in filth do you?” But with a large family and a dog, I could spend every day cleaning and cooking and never stop.
If I don’t prioritize the most important things, they will never get done. My solution to this challenge is to try and prioritize the things that are the most important tasks first. Block out time to take care of those tasks, and then fill in the least important jobs around them. The most important tasks are often not the ones that are the most urgent, you have to prioritize them yourself. What are the most important tasks in your life? It could be getting your financial life in order, or teaching your teen some skills that will help him the rest of his life. Pull out your calendar today and schedule some time in to work on those tasks. Action brings clarity. No one else is going to do it for you!
